october spotlight on: empowerment

We often hear that yoga is effective for quieting the mind, reducing stress, and looking inward to find peace in our personal lives. What we don’t often hear is that practicing yoga can empower us as well. Although truly a non-competitive practice of self-reflection and contemplation, yoga is also an act of empowerment. Consider that the more you are in harmony with yourself (body, mind, spirit), the more apt you are to make choices that complement this harmony. Knowledge is empowering. The more knowledge you acquire, the more open you are to the offerings of the universe, and the more accepting of letting go you’ll become. Although letting go is maybe against what we consider true power, relinquishing control is an act of acceptance as well as empowerment.

Even certain asana names suggest power, strength, and authority (the Warrior poses, Fierce Pose). This month incorporate these empowering asanas into your practice and embrace your power:

Utkatasana (Fierce Pose)

Virabhadrasana I, II & III (Warrior I, II & III)

Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose)

Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose)

Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand)
